Printer Safe VersionOntario High School Inline ChampionshipAfter the round robin play QEP showed
their early strength with a 3 & 0
record and secured the first seed for
the playoffs. RMC also looked strong
taking the 2nd seed with a respectable
2 & 1 record. Blakelock had a 1 & 2
record for the third seed and Loyola
was winless through the round robin and
had the 4th seed.
The semi-
finals showed how close all the teams
were by the end of the weekend with
both being decided by only 1 goal as
QEP beat Loyola 2 - 1, and Blakelock
with somewhat of an upset over RMC 3 -
2.
The final was a classic age
old Eagles, Tabbies championship
conflict that has been wage over many
fields, courts and ice surfaces before,
but never on a roller hockey pad. Could
the surging Cinderella Tabbies take out
the soaring Eagles?
As play
began Blakelock jumped out to a quick
1 - 0 lead only 18 seconds into the
game as Taylor Jenkin found the back of
the net off a pretty feed by Rob Enns.
QEP finally netted their first of the
game when Kelly Vietch shot one past
the tabbies netminder, Mike Collier and
Luke Tresham had the helpers. QEP
closed out the tight defensive first
half with a goal by Collier set up by
Tresham and Brandon Lee to take a 2- 1
lead into the half.
In the
second half the teams continued to give
little room for offence until Alfred
Lee dangled his way past the Tabbies to
extend the QEP lead to 3 - 1 Chris
Vietch and Tresham picked up assists.
QEP seemed to cement the game with a
marker at 5:10 of the second half off
the stick of Collier his second of the
game, leaving the Tabbies with a
daunting 3 goal deficit late in the
game. The Blakelock crew dug deep and
came out firing with 4:17 remaining in
the game Taylor Jenkin started the
comeback with an unassisted tally. Then
team Captain Rob Enns made it
interesting with a pretty play with
Carson Jenkin and Eric Murray at 1:24
to put the Tabbies within one. The
Comeback was complete at 1:02 when
Carson Jenkin filled the net on a
perfect set up by brother Taylor and a
young grade nine roller hockey phenom
Ali Robitaille. With the game certain
for overtime, Mike Collier who had
already tallied twice in the game made
a highlight reel end to end rush that
will most certainly find it's way onto
Leafs TV (who covered the game) with
only 28 seconds left in the game and
gave the Eagles the lead once again.
Blakelock was not prepared to lay down
and concede defeat and took control of
the puck and pulled their goalie, with
seconds ticking down the Blakelock team
pressed but to no avail as QEP
netminder Brett Edwards closed the door
to preserve the first ever Ontario High
School Roller Hockey Championship for
the Queen Elizabeth Park Screaming
rolling Eagles.
