CHATHAM, Ontario, Canada - Canadian
Inline Hockey Association (CIHA)
announces today that the City of
Edmonton, Alberta, Canada has been
awarded the 2003 World Inline Cup,
June 30- July 6. The Northern Stars
Roller Hockey League with over 800
registered players will serve as the
host throughout this ten-day World
Inline Hockey event.
The City of Edmonton has recently
hosted the 2002 FIFA Women U19 World
Cup, 2001 World Track & Field
Championships, 2001 ITU World
Triathlon Championships, 1997 World
Tae Kwon Do Championships and World
Junior Water Ski Championships.
Edmonton has proven to be a “World
Class” event host and is also home to
the Edmonton Oilers of the NHL and
Canada’s largest shopping, amusement
park, hotel mall – the West Edmonton
Mall.
The World Inline Cup will feature
teams in the 12U, 14U, 16U, 18U, 20U,
Women (13+) and Senior Men’s (20+)
divisions. The concept of the World
Inline Cup will be to provide a unique
experience for all players by living
at the University of Alberta Student
Dorms in an “Athlete Village”. This
unique experience provides for
interaction of the youth players of
the world, organized activities away
from the rink along with competition
from teams from around the Globe.
Canada will once again organize
Provincial Teams from Ontario, Alberta
and Pacific at all age levels (20+
teams), along with confirmed
commitments from National Teams from
Great Britain, Ireland, Australia,
Germany and as always great interest
from top regional teams in the USA.
These youth players are the future
world stars of inline hockey!
The international teams along with the
sixty plus Alberta Community Rep.
Teams will converge on Edmonton three
days prior to the World Inline Cup for
the 2003 Western Can Am Cup, June 27-
29, 2003. The Western Can Am Cup
provides opportunity for the Canadian
Community teams and the international
teams, players and families to
interact and compete in a weekend of
competition and friendship.
The World Inline Cup will feature
Round Robin play in all divisions
followed by a re-seeding medal round
for both Pool A Championship and Pool
B Championship. Special events during
the week will include a skills
competition, open draft friendship
game, tour to Canadian Rocky
Mountains, western style barbeque, day
trips to West Edmonton Mall (go-carts,
water-park and shopping) and opening &
closing ceremonies.
CIHA is hoping that Walter Gretzky’s
travel plans will work out so he can
continue to be part of the Team
Ontario coaching staff and provide all
participants with laughter and
stories. We know that the City of
Edmonton will embrace a visit from Mr
Gretzky!
Specific team packages for the 2003
World Inline Cup will be available
